What We Do

The Help Center is a single point of contact for information and assistance with classroom, desktop, network and telephone technologies. The Help Center also provides audiovisual service and support for the campus.

Windows PCs should meet the recommended requirements for running the Windows 11 operating system or later. Apple computers should meet the minimum requirements for running the macOS 15 operating system or later.

Computer requests should be requested through RIC Service Center | Computer Deployment Request. All computer requests are reviewed by User Support Services, and are approved/completed based on age of systems, performance, and roles/responsibilities of the requestor. Any additional approvals that may be needed will be handled on a case-by-case basis and communicated to the requestor after the request is submitted.

Windows and Macintosh systems are deployed with a standard set of software, which includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Zoom
  • EDR Antivirus/Antimalware

Additional software may be installed on Windows PC’s or Apple Macintosh systems upon request. This software, along with other specialized applications, are also available on computers installed in labs and classrooms throughout the campus, as well as the walk-in computing facilities on the third floor of Adams Library.

Rhode Island College students, faculty, and staff have access to Microsoft 365 which provides users access to several web-based apps including Outlook, Calendar, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Teams and more. Additionally RIC students, full time faculty, and some full time staff also have the ability to download the latest desktop version of Microsoft 365 (PC and Mac) for free through their Microsoft 365 account. The minimum hardware requirements are the following:

  • Windows PC’s (Windows 11 or later)
    • Intel 8th Generation Core or AMD Zen 2 or later CPU
    • 512 GB SSD storage
    • 16 GB RAM memory
  • Apple Macintosh (macOS 15 or later)
    • Apple M1 CPU
    • 512 GB SSD storage
    • 16 GB RAM memory

The College also recommends personal computer purchases for students meet the same minimum requirements.

The two most recent versions of the four major web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari) are supported. Blackboard Supported Browsers provides more details. A Browser Checker is also available on the Blackboard LMS Help Center page.

User Support Services (USS) officially supports Hewlett Packard and Savin (multi-function only) black and white and color laser printers with network printing capabilities. USS will attempt to repair these types of printers manufactured within the last seven years. Savin multi-function printers are supported by Core Business Technologies when hardware related issues are encountered.

For other brands and types of printers, User Support Services will provide limited support for connecting to College managed/assigned workstations, but are unable to provide repairs.
