Online Learning Policy Requirement

Per the Online Learning Policy, starting with the Spring 2026 semester, faculty members must have completed Blackboard Ultra Professional Development with the Center for Instructional Technology to be scheduled to teach a fully online or hybrid course. The required PD workshops are Getting Started with Blackboard, Assignments, Inline Grading & Rubrics, Creating Online Tests, Mastering the Gradebook, Communicating with Students, and Blackboard Ally/Microsoft's Accessibility Checker. There are also required courses that must be completed through the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. For more information, please email the FCTL at fctl@ric.edu.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. When LockDown Browser is required for an online exam, students are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, or access other applications. Topics will include:

What to Expect at the Session

During the session, we will walk through how Ally checks the following types of files: PDFs, Microsoft Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Images and other common file formats. You’ll also learn how Ally automatically generates alternative formats—such as audio, electronic braille, and HTML—for your students, providing more flexible options for engagement. We will also cover how to use Microsoft's Accessibility Checker in both the desktop and online versions of Microsoft Office applications. In addition, you will learn how to request professional captions for videos in Kaltura. By the end of this workshop you'll know how to interpret Ally's feedback, use Microsoft's Accessibility Checker, improve your existing course materials, and apply accessible design to future content.
