- Two RIC Alumni Earn STEAM Educator Awards
Erin Giuliano and Christopher Colson were lauded for teaching innovative and engaging lessons about STEAM in their classrooms.
Erin Giuliano ’03, a teacher at Park Elementary School in Warwick, and Christopher Colson, MEd ’03, a teacher at Goff Middle School in Pawtucket, were conferred the 2025 Rhode Island STEAM Educator Award by the Rhode Island Department of Education, Rhode Island Energy and the Rhode Island STEAM Center at Rhode Island College.
This award recognizes teachers who deliver innovative and engaging lessons about integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Giuliano and Colson were granted $1,000 for use in their classrooms and $500 for personal use.
“It is vital that every student have access to STEAM learning,” says Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “The STEAM-centered approach used by Erin and Christopher applies authentic, real-world problem solving, where creativity, collaboration and critical thinking come together to inspire curiosity and innovation.”
Doug Alexander, director of the Institute for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies at Rhode Island College, says as a former STEAM teacher, he understands the challenges and significance of the work Giuliano and Colson produce.
“When K-12 students are inspired to connect with STEAM in meaningful and relevant ways, it shapes the trajectory of their entire education and, we hope, leads them to rewarding STEAM careers,’’ he says.
Lisa Schultz, executive director of elementary education, accountability and compliance at Warwick Schools, praised Giuliano’s passion for STEAM education.
“Her teaching philosophy embraces productive struggle and collaboration, encouraging students to think critically and work together to solve complex problems,” she says. “Erin’s students thrive under her care, and their enthusiasm for learning speaks volumes about her impact as an educator.”
Suzette Wordell, principal at Goff Middle School, also commended Colson’s efforts.
“Christopher has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering a love for STEAM among his students,” she says. “His ability to connect complex concepts to real-world applications has not only enhanced student understanding but also inspired many to pursue careers in these fields.”
