Record crowd learns about opportunities at RIC.
Rhode Island College’s Open House on Nov. 1 proved to be a rousing success, attracting more than 1,000 prospective students and their families.
That represents a 24 percent increase in attendance from last year’s Open House, according to Director of Admissions and Campus Visit Experience Jason Anthony.
Waiting to greet them were RIC administrators, faculty, staff and students, including more than 20 student ambassadors as well as the RIC Spirit Team.
Haley Christinson, 17, and her mother, Debbie, of Amherst, New Hampshire, said RIC’s Open House ranks as the best they’ve encountered since they began touring colleges over the last year.
“When we saw the Spirit Team with their pom poms as we were walking in, that got us really pumped up,” Debbie said.
Open House included presentations about academic and disability support services, admissions and financial aid, athletics and tours of each of the college’s residence halls.
Haley admitted that she is nervous about college life but hopes to make new friends and memories while studying psychology.
“College will be different, but I will have more freedom,” she said. “There are a lot of emotions to go through when you’re stepping into the real world and out of your comfort zone.”
Charlie Greene, a prospective student from Cumberland, intends to major in business. “I hope to meet new people, explore the campus and learn more about myself and how I can make the world a better place,” he said.
Alumnus Chris Kennedy said he hopes his daughter, Paige, has the same positive experience he had at RIC. Chris graduated from RIC in 1999 with an elementary education degree. He is a special education teacher in East Providence.
“Paige is good with kids,” he said, “so I think she’ll do well studying human development, but she’s exploring her options,” he said. “I’m so proud that she’ll be studying at RIC. She’s a great student. I believe she’ll excel on this campus.”
