Employee ADA Accommodations

Individuals with Disabilities

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rhode Island College will provide reasonable accommodations to an otherwise qualified applicant or employee with a disability to enable such person to perform essential job functions and/or enjoy the benefits and privileges of employment, so long as such accommodation does not impose an undue burden on the College.

The Law and Definition of a Disability

To be eligible for reasonable accommodations under the ADA, an employee must have a "disability," as defined here, and must be qualified to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. A disability is defined under the ADA as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. A disability also includes having a record of such impairment, or being regarded as having such an impairment. Major life activities include functions such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing and standing.

How to Request and Submit a Request for Reasonable Accommodation

If you think you need a reasonable accommodation for a permanent or temporary disability, please contact the Office of Human Resource Office; email benefits@ric.edu or call 401-456-8446. A representative from Human Resources will provide you an overview of the required documentation and process. This documentation should be completed by the employee and the employee’s medical provider; RIC Employee Request for Accommodation and Diagnosing Professional’s Documentation of Disability and/or Pregnancy Related Condition.

After a Request is Submitted

Once the completed documentation has been received, the Office of Human Resources will conduct an assessment of the documentation and the ability of the College to provide reasonable accommodations, and will guide the employee on next steps. Contents of the request are confidential and will only be shared as needed with the appropriate personnel to consider the implementation of a reasonable accommodation.
