IPLWS student award and scholarship 2024 recipients

The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies annually awards scholarships to students studying Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures, minoring and majoring in Portuguese, and studying or interning abroad in a Portuguese-speaking nation.

IPLWS Internship 2025 (Spring and Summer I)

Details

The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies (IPLWS) is sponsoring 1-2 RIC student interns in the Spring 2025-Summer Session I 2025 in the Main Office of the IPLWS. The paid internship focuses primarily on the 2025 Art Calendar Contest of the IPLWS, a community activity for K-12 students enrolled in Portuguese language classes in the state of Rhode Island (in public, charter, private and community schools). The internship extends through the month of June and the celebration of Day of Portugal of Rhode Island - for which the Calendar contest is designed.

  • Must be a full time student at Rhode Island College
  • Must be a declared major or minor in Portuguese
  • Must be fluent in Portuguese
  • Minimum GPA: 2.75
  • Preference will be given to Education majors

Details

General Responsibilities
  • Reports to the Director of the IPLWS 
  • Assists with office work including cataloging of books and materials; assists with the 2025 Art Calendar Contest.
Time and Compensation
  • Total of up to 30 hours at $18/hr to be paid monthly. Total stipend up to: $540.00 
  • Internship will average 2-4 hours per week (flexible) in the Spring and Summer I 2025 semesters.

John A. and Mary V. Lima Memorial Scholarship in Portuguese Studies

Details

Scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to study the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures at Rhode Island College. A limited number of scholarships, based on the availability of institutional and private funds, will be awarded to academically meritorious students who have met eligibility requirements and the criteria of the respective scholarship fund and donor.

Requirements

  • have matriculated into a baccalaureate degree program at Rhode Island College
  • have attained and continue to maintain a cumulative GPA of a minimum of B- (2.67)
  • have declared a major or minor in Portuguese

Funds

Limited funds are available and awards depend upon the pool of applications presented.

Recipients will be notified in writing by email if selected.

Revocation or Decline of Award

The IPLWS reserves the right to cancel any scholarship or aid awarded at any time if the applicant fails to meet the standards of academic progress, any other scholarship requirements, or falsifies information reported.

Lema-Fernandes Study Abroad Fund

Details

The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies at Rhode Island College will award scholarships to partially support the tuition of RIC student participants in study abroad or internship programs in Portugal or other Portuguese-speaking nations. Limited funds are available, and awards depend upon the pool of applications presented. In previous years, awards have ranged from $1,000 to $6,000.

Requirements

  • comply with all RIC Study Abroad requirements 
  • have been accepted and/or enrolled in a course or program abroad 
  • demonstrate a commitment or intention to study Portuguese at Rhode Island College

Please note: Students in their graduating year who are completing or have already completed all requirements in the minor or major in Portuguese are eligible to apply.​

Funds

Awarded funds will be disbursed to the student’s RIC account upon:

  • completion of the study abroad program
  • transfer of program credits to Rhode Island College
