Requirements for Progression from Major to Teacher Candidate
The Feinstein School of Education & Human Development (FSEHD) has specific requirements for the progression from major to teacher candidate for undergraduate education preparation programs.
Basic Skills Test Scores
Student majors in initial teacher certification programs must submit basic skills test scores to progress from student major to teacher candidate within the FSEHD. (Most likely, you completed the test in high school). Student majors will share these scores with their professional advisor or FSEHD academic advisor.
Submit SAT, ACT, or PRAXIS Core Test Scores in Reading/Writing and Math
You will need to submit SAT, ACT, or PRAXIS Core test scores in Reading/Writing and Math. This meets the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) basic competency requirements for admission to teacher education programs in Rhode Island.
RIDE-Identified Required Scores
While RIDE has identified benchmark scores, student majors will progress to teacher candidate within the FSEHD regardless of the achieved scores.
Benchmark Scores by Test Type
| SAT Test | SAT Required Score | ACT Test | ACT Required Score | PRAXIS Core | PRAXIS Required Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English-Based Reading & Writing | 480 | English | 18 | Reading (5713) | 165 |
| Math | 530 | Reading | 22 | Writing (5723) | 168 |
| Math | 22 | Math (5733) | 170 |
Who Is Exempt from Submitting Basic Skills Test Scores
There are four identified conditions in which candidates would not be required to submit basic skills test scores (see below). If you do not meet one of these four conditions, you must submit your scores to your advisor.
- Student Majors who completed high school outside of the USA are not required to submit scores.
- Student Majors with scores over 10 years old are not required to submit scores.
- Student Majors who have earned an associate degree from CCRI and hold a 2.75 GPA or higher at Rhode Island College are not required to submit scores.
- Student majors who are earning a second bachelor’s degree are not required to submit test scores.
Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
RIDE requirement for admission to educator preparation programs:
- Students with a 2.75 or greater GPA and meet all other requirements will progress within the FSEHD.
- Students with a GPA between 2.50 - 2.749 will progress from student major to teacher candidate with support. Students who progress with support will need to create a success plan to ensure their GPA meets the 2.75 requirement prior to residency 2 (student teaching). Candidates who do not earn a 2.75 prior to student teaching will not be able to complete their program.
First Year Writing (FYW) Grade
If you have not earned a C or better in FYW you are not eligible for progression within the FSEHD.
Course and Program Requirements
- complete 24 credits – this includes transfer credits
- complete FNED 101 (grade of satisfactory)
- complete RIC Math Milestone (Math Competency)
- Program-Specific Requirements: Complete courses required for progression within your program along with grade requirements and/or content GPA requirements. These vary with programs.
