Undergraduate Teacher Candidate Progression
All undergraduate and second degree students who wish to complete an initial teacher certification degree must meet the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development (FSEHD) teacher progression requirements. To be eligible for progression, candidates must meet FSEHD and program-specific requirements.
How Progression Works
Progression into FSEHD undergraduate teacher preparation programs occurs each fall and spring semester. The FSEHD Dean’s Office hosts one progression information session each semester to guide candidates through the process. To be considered, candidates must:
- meet with their professional advisor (all students who did not transfer from another institution) or FSEHD faculty advisor (all transfer students)
- fulfill all FSEHD and program-specific progression requirements
- receive an official recommendation for progression from their advisor
Please Note: Candidates who do not meet with the appropriate advisor will not be eligible for progression.
2025-26 Program Progression
Candidates progressing to the FSEHD teacher preparation programs for the spring 2026 semester will be notified of their status one week prior to the start of classes. If you believe you should have progressed and did not receive notification from the FSEHD, please contact your advisor and the appropriate department chair.
2026-27 Program Progression
An information session for FSEHD candidates who have not yet progressed to their chosen program will be held on February 4 2026, from 12:30–1:30 pm in Faculty Dining Main. Light refreshments will be provided.

Rhode Island Background Check
Every FSEHD student who works with children/youth/adults must maintain a current BCI from the Attorney General’s Office. The BCI is required before entering a classroom or community space, virtually and/or face to face, whether observing, tutoring, teaching, and/or participating in any type of community activity. The FSEHD offers free BCI clinics to all FSEHD students. If students need to have a BCI conducted and are unable to attend one of the provided clinics, they are responsible for going to the Attorney General’s office and getting the BCI before they can be placed. BCIs will be submitted and maintained in Anthology.
