Language Placement
If you have prior knowledge of French, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese, our department provides online placement surveys that allow us to determine the appropriate level for you. If you have earned the RI Seal of Biliteracy, please be in touch with the Chair of Modern Languages, David Ramirez, to find out which course you can enroll in. Email David Ramirez at dramirez@ric.edu.
What to Expect
The survey will take approximately 10–15 minutes, and you can complete it using your phone. Before starting the survey, we suggest that you make sure to be in a quiet place and close all other applications and browser tabs on your device.
Placement Survey Procedures
Portuguese

French, Italian or Spanish
- Create an Emmersion account and be sure to save the information in the event you need to access your account again. (You can log back in at any time at the Emmersion login screen.)
- After creating your account/signing in you will be brought to your Dashboard where you can select the language(s) for your survey. Click on "Take Test."
- Once you have finished the survey, please take a screenshot of your results for your records.
- To register into a 102 or higher course, please send your results, along with the course and section you wish to take, to the chair of Modern Languages (email David Ramirez at dramirez@ric.edu) or the department's Administrative Assistant (email Kristen Brien at kbrien@ric.edu).
