General Program Questions

Yes! Study abroad experiences are encouraged and will not affect your application or participation in the program.

Ideally, during your junior year, at least one year before applying.

You must be a first-generation college student with financial need or from a group underrepresented in graduate education

Yes, students from all majors at RIC are welcome to apply. However, the McNair Scholars Program is specifically designed for those planning to pursue research-based graduate degrees (Master’s or PhD). It is not intended for students whose primary goal is to attend professional schools such as law, medicine, pharmacy, or business.

No. The program is for students currently completing their first bachelor’s degree.

Financial Questions

Many grad programs offer full funding. We’ll help you become a competitive applicant for fellowships and assistantships.

Not exactly. It’s a research and graduate school prep program that includes a stipend and travel funding.

No, it will not impact your financial aid package.

Program Requirements

Students can apply to either Master’s or PhD programs. The goal is to complete a doctoral degree within 10 years of earning a bachelor’s degree.
