The Center for Scholar Development, in the Division of Student Success, supports first-generation students from high school through college with programs that foster academic success, personal growth, and preparation for graduate study. Through our four TRIO programs and the RIC Preparatory Enrollment Program (PEP), we provide a supportive community where students belong, grow, and thrive.

What We Do

Federal TRIO Programs

The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) in the Center for Scholar Development are designed to provide educational pathways in an affirming environment for first-generation scholars. The federally funded TRIO programs are:

  • McNair Scholars Program – preparing first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented undergraduate students for doctoral studies through research opportunities, academic support, and graduate school preparation
  • Student Support Services Program – assisting first-generation students in completing their RIC degree
  • Upward Bound Program – helping first-generation high schoolers graduate and enroll in college

RIC Preparatory Enrollment Program (PEP)

Our Preparatory Enrollment Program (PEP) supports first-generation RI high school graduates in their admission to the college and throughout their development as a RIC student. Through a summer bridge program, personalized advising, and a strong community, PEP helps students build a solid academic foundation that supports their engagement and retention at RIC.

Student Support Services (SSS)

Our main goal is to get students to reach the most important milestone in college, graduation. We provide enough support for students to feel confident in their ability as a scholar, and courageous enough to succeed no matter the obstacle faced. If you are interested in taking that risk, join SSS.
