Testing Accommodations - Student Responsibilities

Who is Eligible for Testing Accommodations?

You are eligible for testing accommodations if you are registered with the Center for Disability Access and have testing accommodations on your Eligibility Letter. These testing accommodations may include the following:

  • Extra Time
  • Separate/Reduced Distraction Testing Location
  • and/or Testing with Assistive Technology.

Request for Accommodations Process

Speak with your faculty members

You should speak with each of your faculty members at the start of the semester and plan how your testing accommodations will be implemented. (ex. Taking it with your faculty or scheduling with the CDA).

Testing in the Center for Disability Access

If your professor cannot directly provide your testing accommodations (for example, if there is not a separate space available in their department, or you need to test with assistive technology only available in CDA), and your class has in-person tests, you will generally need to schedule and take your tests in the Center for Disability Access.

Not Testing in the Center for Disability Access

  • Your professor indicates that they can directly provide your testing accommodations themselves (i.e. by proctoring your extra time or providing a separate testing room in their department)
  • You are a Nursing student whose courses meet off campus at RI Nursing Education Center (RINEC). The RINEC has their own Graduate Assistant and their own process for scheduling your tests with accommodations there. To schedule a test at RINEC email rinec-testing@ric.edu  one week ahead of the test date.
  • Your class will be taking their tests online, while not physically in a classroom (i.e. through Blackboard from your home for example). Instead, speak with your professor about how your accommodations can be implemented in the online test (for example, by your professor adding your extra testing time within Blackboard).

Contact the CDA to Schedule Exam

Once you have faculty approval to take your exam with the CDA, you must schedule your exam at least one week in advance. The CDA cannot guarantee proctoring for requests submitted after the one-week deadline.

Before submitting your request, confirm with your instructor the date and time the class will take the test, how long the class has to complete it, and the type of exam (quiz, test, midterm, or final). You will need this information to submit your request correctly.

Setting Your Exam Time

Whenever possible, your exam should start at the same time as the rest of the class and should not conflict with your other scheduled classes. If your extra time accommodation creates a conflict, you must obtain your instructor’s approval to test at a different time or on a different day before submitting your testing request.

Our scheduled proctoring hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am–4:30 pm.

Contact CDA at 401-456-2776 or CDA@ric.edu if you need assistance identifying an appropriate start time.

Designating Accommodations Needed

Check off which of your approved accommodations you want to use on the test.

Refer to How To Schedule A Test in AIM - Student Guide 2026.

Arriving for and Taking the Exam

Students are expected to arrive on time. If you are running late for your test, please contact the CDA. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the CDA will contact your faculty. Tardiness will impact how long you have to take your exam. The end time of your exam will remain as originally scheduled, even if you are allowed to start late. No additional time will be allowed. If you are unable to take your exam as scheduled, you must contact our office as well as your faculty. The faculty will determine when or if you may reschedule.
