Committee on General Education
Monthly Meetings
COGE meets every second Friday of the month from 9–11 am on Zoom in the 2025-26 academic year. COGE meetings are open to all. Campus members are welcome to join on zoom and observe proceedings of the full committee.
Executive Committee Meetings
COGE Executive Committee meets on the fourth Friday of the preceding month to prepare for the monthly COGE meetings.
Submitting New Course Proposals Prior to Executive Committee Meetings
Faculty considering new General Education course proposals should submit proposals no later than the Monday of the COGE EC meeting date identified in the grid below. For example, course proposals to be considered in the November COGE meeting must be submitted to COGE EC no later than Monday, October 20 to provide time for feedback and edits (if needed).

General Education Course Proposal Process and Requirements
Process
It is strongly recommended that proposers of new General Education courses start the process simultaneously with COGE and UCC to ensure quick feedback, progression and approval through both governing bodies. COGE and UCC typically work together to approve proposals needing relatively little revisions in the same month. Proposals requiring significant revisions may need longer to be approved.
Existing courses seeking inclusion in the General Education program should first explore how the course meets the Gen Ed learning outcomes in the intended Gen Ed category. The teaching and assessment of an existing course may require some revisions to be approved as a Gen Ed course. The rest of the process is the same as that for new proposals.
Requirements
All COGE proposals submitted to the COGE Executive Committee must include:
- the relevant COGE form
- a sample syllabus clarifying how the course will teach and assess the Gen Ed learning outcomes in the intended category
- the completed UCC form with all relevant signatures in place.
Relevant signatures include those of the proposer and the department chair/program director when submitting to COGE EC. Once cleared by COGE EC, proposals will then need the signature of the immediate supervising Dean and the COGE Chair for the proposal to be heard by full COGE. Once COGE approves, the proposal moves to the UCC for final approval. Remaining signatures on the UCC form can be secured at this stage in consultation with the UCC Chair.
Completed proposals should be forwarded to COGE: email COGE at COGE@ric.edu in accordance with the timing described. Faculty are welcome and encouraged to contact the COGE Chair with questions about proposal preparation (or in general) either using the COGE email or directly: email Suchandra Basu at sbasu@ric.edu.
