Philip Martorella received his musical education at the Mannes College of Music (B.M.), the Juilliard School (M.M.), and the Manhattan School of Music (Music Ed. M.A.). He studied piano with Avraham Sternklar, Nadia Reisenberg, Eugenia Hyman, Sascha Gorodnitski and Adele Marcus, and piano accompanying studies with Samuel Sanders. Mr Martorella is currently on the adjunct piano faculty at Rhode Island College. He serves as Minister of Music at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Greenwich, Rhode Island and serves as organist at Temple Beth-El, Providence, Rhode Island. He has given numerous performances on television and radio, at various schools, colleges and universities, music halls such as Weill Recital Hall, Paul Recital Hall, and various mansions. He performed with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, the Providence Singers and the South County Chamber Singers. Mr. Martorella conducted Serge Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf at the Odeum theater, East Greenwich, RI in 1995 and was musical director for the 2001 production of Enrico Garzilli’s Shadow of the Wall at the Providence Performing Arts Center, and also performed as pianist in the production of E. Garzilli’s Michaelangelo at PPAC with the Opera Providence. He has performed the Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11 for piano and orchestra by Frederic Chopin for a special concert based on the theme of “Remembering 9/11/01 and Bringing Hope to the Future” on September 14, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in America with his brother conducting. He recently toured Italy and has performed in Florence, Rome and performed at the organ for a service at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. He recently released an album of his own compositions entitled “Relax and Dream” and has written an article about his musical compositions entitled “Something About the Music”, an Anthology of Critical Opinions: A Guide to Contemporary Repertory. His book, entitled “A Controversial Approach to Music Theory and Musical Scansion” is published by Stillwater Publications and is available. The world premiere of his suite entitled “Constellations” for chorus and one piano, four hands was performed at Rhode Island College under the direction of Dr. Teresa Coffman, with John Black and Philip Martorella as pianists. The world premiere of Mr. Martorella’s Piano Concerto in C minor has been performed by the composer with the Rhode Island College Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Alexei Shabelin at Rhode Island College.
