Math Placement Practice – Stage 2: Practice

How to Complete this Work

  • Practice topics that are necessary for a Level 1 math placement.
  • Look up how to do things you have not seen in a while or have forgotten.
  • Practice writing out and solving the problems without a calculator.
  • Check your answers!
  • Keep in mind how you are asked to write your answer. This is to prepare for the proctored placement.

Simplify the Expression II: Write your answer in ax2+bx+c form.

You will need to write answers for the value of a, the value of b, and the value of c.

Example: -x2+4x-9 means a=-1, b=4c=-9

  1. 6x2+5x-9x2+14
  2. (-3x2+9x-4)+(-8x2+8x-2)
  3. (-6x2-8x+5)-(-5x2+7x-8)
Substitution: Evaluate the expression for the given value of x.
  1. 3x-5 when x=2
  2. -5x-6 when x=4
  3. -8x+11 when x=-3
  4. 3x2+4x-5 when x=-1
  5. -x2-5x+7 when x=-2
Solving equations: Find the value of x.
  1. -3x=12
  2. 5x=-30
  3. x-12=13
  4. -x-5=-7
  5. 8-2x=17
  6. 14x=2
  7. 9x=3
  8. -x+4=12
  9. -3x-9=12
  10. 2x-5=7+6x
  11. 2(x-5)+3x=x+6
  12. -5(x+1)+3x+2=6x+4
  13. 13(x+1)+23(x-4)=3x+11
  14. 25(x-6)+35(x+2)=4x-8
Calculate the slope, m, of the line passing through the two points.

Write your answer as a simplified fraction.

  1. (2,-1),(-5,3)
  2. (3,1),(4,-3)
  3. (-2,-3),(-1,5)
  4. (-4,1),(2,6)
Find the equation of the line passing through the two points.

Write your answer in y=mx+b form, where both m and b are written as simplified fractions.

  1. (3,4),(5,8)
  2. (5,-2),(-3,14)
  3. (5,-4),(7,2)
Find the y-intercept.

The y-intercept is the point at which the line passes through the y-axis. At that location, the x coordinate is 0. Therefore, to calculate the y-intercept plug in x=0 and solve for y.

  1. x+2y=8
  2. 3x-y=19
  3. x+2y=18
  4. 2x-3y=-19
