Awards Bestowed at Cap & Gown Convocation

These awards are presented by the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Cap & Gown Convocation. No application is required.

Outstanding Student in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

This award is given annually to the senior, graduating with an artificial intelligence major, with the highest-grade point average. 

Outstanding Student Award in Computer Information Systems

This award is given annually to the senior, graduating with a computer science and information systems major, with the highest-grade point average. 

Richard A. Howland Computer Science Award

This award of a significant book, subscription or professional membership is presented to a graduating senior for outstanding performance in the field of computer science. It is named as a memorial to Richard A. Howland, an inspiring teacher and scholar of both mathematics and computer science.

Congressman James R. Langevin Outstanding Student in Cybersecurity Award 

This award is given annually to the senior, graduating with a cybersecurity major, with the highest-grade point average.

James A. Schaefer Book Award

This award, which provides funds for the purchase of books and a membership in the ACM, is named for James A. Schaefer, one of the founders of RIC's computer science program in the early 1980's. This award is given to a computer science major who completed CSCI 315 at Rhode Island College for the first time within the previous calendar year and of all such students has the highest GPA in computer science. If there is a tie, the award is given to the student who, in the judgment of the department, has contributed the most to the major. 

Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society

Being inducted into RIC's chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international computing honor society, is a notable honor. It is the first chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon in the state, a collaboration between the computer science and computing and information sciences programs, inducting its first members in 2011.
