Anthropology Award

James Houston Award in Anthropology

This award is presented by the Department of Anthropology at Cap & Gown Convocation. No application is required. The James Houston award is presented to a graduating senior majoring in anthropology who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and who has had significant involvement in the department and the concerns of the discipline. The award is made possible by contributions from the faculty of the Department of Anthropology and by a generous gift from Alice and James Houston, whose interests in researching, recording and teaching about the cultures and habitats of native America have been a constant inspiration.

Eligibility

• graduating senior majoring in anthropology
• general academic grade point average of 3.0 and a 3.5 average in their major
• demonstrated significant involvement in the department and in the concerns of the discipline beyond course responsibilities

Selection Process

• The Department Chair will screen the records of graduating majors to determine which students meet the academic criteria.
• The Department Chair will report the names of the nominees and each candidate's general academic grade point average of 3.0 and a 3.5 average in their major at the February or March department meeting.
• The faculty will discuss each candidate's eligibility and contributions to the department and in the concerns of the discipline beyond course responsibilities.
• The Department Chair will notify the selected recipient and advise the appropriate administrative officer(s).
