Honorary Degrees
One of the greatest distinctions Rhode Island College can award is an honorary degree. Since 1854, the college has conferred nearly 400 honorary degrees, with past recipients being both alumni and friends of RIC. The college also honors notable individuals by asking them to offer remarks in celebration of our graduates.
Now Accepting Nominations
We invite and encourage the college community to submit honorary degree nominations at this time. Our honorary degree criteria should guide you as you identify the individual(s) you wish to recommend.
The deadline to submit a nomination is January 29, 2026.
Honorary Degree Nominations
Each year, in preparation for commencement exercises, the Honorary Degree Committee invites members of the college community to submit nominations. These nominations will recommend individuals to receive an honorary degree and/or serve as commencement speaker.
