The CDA understands that individuals experiencing temporarily disabling conditions that are a result of injuries, surgery or short-term medical conditions may need access to services and resources similar to those accessible to people with permanent disabilities.

Temporary Impairments

A temporary impairment (actual or expected duration of six months or fewer) that does not qualify as an ADA disability, may still be considered a serious health condition requiring reasonable accommodations at Rhode Island College.

Examples of temporary conditions and injuries that are eligible for temporary accommodations through registration with the CDA include:

  • A broken or sprained bone with an expected recovery time of a few weeks or months.
  • Concussions with an expected recovery time of a few weeks or months.
  • Recovery from surgery.

If limitations due to a temporary condition or injury persist beyond 6 months, are especially severe in nature, or will have continued lasting effects, you should register for permanent accommodations with the Center for Disability Access by following the CDA registration process.

Please Note:

  • Missing a few classes or deadlines because of acute illness, such as the flu, does not require formal accommodation. Students who incur absences must take the initiative in determining from the instructor what work can be made up. All students who incur an extended absence (five consecutive days or more) should submit a request for assistance form to the Dean of Students Office so that a notice (not an excuse) can be sent to instructors.
  • Please understand that we cannot assist with certain supports related to temporary injuries, such as providing a wheelchair, assistance with everyday tasks (e.g. laundry) or transportation to medical appointments off campus.
