Student organizations provide endless leadership and networking opportunities to create a more well-rounded co-curricular experience.

The Benefits of Recognized Student Organizations

Institutionally recognized student organizations are those that have Student Community Government (SCG) and Student Activities approval and receive the following privileges:

  • ability to reserve space and services  
  • use campus resources such as supplies from Student Union 408, AV equipment, etc...
  • participation in Student Activities Involvement Fairs & Showcases
  • access to SA event promotions and marketing 
  • listed in Student Organization Directory 
  • mail pick-up in Student Union  
  • access to a so.ric.edu email 
  • event planning support and assistance from Student Activities  
  • ability to use Rhode Island College name in association

How to Start a New Student Organization

  1. Review the list of current organizations to ensure the organization does not already exist
  2. Set up a meeting to discuss the new organization with Student Community Government (SCG) Secretary and the Assistant Director of Student Activities.
  3. Find a minimum of three other students who are interested in joining to fill the eBoard roles of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
  4. Identify an advisor the eBoard agrees on who is a full-time faculty or staff member
  5. Schedule a meeting with the Student Community Government for review. Create a constitution using the SCG Model Constitution template.
  6. Receive approval from the SCG Parliament
  7. Submit organization officer list to MyRIC. You can do so by going to the Student homepage -> Campus Solutions -> Student Organizations (left-hand side) -> Pick your Org -> Filter by year -> Add eBoard members & Advisor -> Save
  8. Submit a signed advisor agreement to SCG
  9. Attend a President & Treasurer’s Meeting with SCG
  10. Attend a mandatory Student Organization Orientation with Student Activities to learn and review policies and procedures
  11. Request your organization budget with SCG

Registering Your Student Organization

Registration for new and current student organizations is required every year to maintain recognition by Rhode Island College. Registration is through the MyRIC portal and all organization information and officers should be updated regularly.
